Palate Expanders
As part of an orthodontic treatment protocol known as dentofacial orthopedics, palate expanders (aka palatal expanders) are custom appliances that are used to physically widen the upper jaw to create more space for the growth of permanent teeth. Palate expanders are most commonly used in children and teens, as the two halves of the upper jaw bone (maxilla) do not permanently fuse until the mid-to-late teenage years. Palate expanders sound intimidating, but they are actually a relatively simple and pain-free orthodontic treatment option. Many times, palatal expanders are used in the first stage of orthodontic treatment, prior to braces.
Clear Braces (Invisalign)
Naturally, a major apprehension amongst teenage and adult patients when it comes to teeth straightening is they're worried about how uncomfortable and unsightly traditional wire braces will be. Invisalign® clear aligners solve both of these problems, and they produce far faster results compared to wire braces. Mouth guards
Custom mouth guards can be particularly effective at correcting minor misalignments with the jaw. Mouth guards work by reducing stress on the temporomandibular joint; most often worn at night, they can correct common conditions such as sleep apnea, bruxism (grinding or clenching of the teeth), and other complications and symptoms related to TMJ disorder.
Retainers
Retainers are worn after braces or Invisalign treatments are complete. Permanently straightening teeth is a process that is broken down into two major phases: the active phase and the retention phase. During the active phase, constant pressure is kept on the teeth to physically pull them into alignment. Once that pressure is released, the teeth will naturally want to return to their original position - retainers prevent this from happening. Depending on your specific treatment, a retainer will be worn anywhere from just a few months to several years after the alignment process is complete.
